Maria Tapia was raised in the Napa Valley. Prior to moving to San Diego, she obtained her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. During her time at UC Hastings, Maria was Co-President of the La Raza Law Students Association and a student member of the admissions committee. She is a first generation college graduate and fluent in Spanish. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a minor in Chicano Studies.
Maria was admitted to the California State Bar in 2015. Before joining Amezola Legal Group, Maria’s practice focused on employment law, specifically workers’ rights issues. Maria is passionate about defending and promoting the rights of immigrant workers. She has experience advising clients with discrimination and retaliation claims, wage claims, and requests for reasonable accommodations under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and California wage and hour laws. She has experience representing workers who have faced wage theft before the California Labor Commissioner and workers appealing denials of unemployment insurance claims before the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board.
When not in the office, Maria enjoys visiting her family in the Bay Area, trying new coffee shops around San Diego, treasure hunting at the local swap meets and yard sales and attending local concerts.
